She met and married Alexander Colville inMelbourne and they had a daughter who died in infancy and two sons, JACK andROBERT. Alex died in Melbourne around 1899 and Jane with her two sons laterreturned to live in New Zealand. Both sons served in the 1914-1918 war. Jack was killed at Gallipoli in 1915 but Robert survived despitesuffering from pulmonary tuberculosis as a result of war service, to live tothe ripe old age of 89. He died at Hamilton in 1985. Prior to his war service, Robert had been in the plumbing trade withA & T Burt Ltd in Dunedin but after the war and a period of ill-health hedid not return to the trade. Instead he took on an apple orchard at Ettrick, not far from his mother who had re-married and lived near Rosburgh. He married Margaret Moore of Oamaru some time in the late 1930s andthey had two children, Rata May and Robert. Rata Mat married Gordon Freeman awidower with three children. Gordon died and May had a new home built at Papanuwhere she still lives. Robert Colville junior had three children and one of them adopted. | 710 | John J.Hennessey married Emma Teed. He was afireman & worked his way up to Captain. Unfortunately, she died before she could see that happen. She died Jan 11, 1877. They were both born about 1848(maybe she was born 1850..?) Therecords for their marriage may not exist due to the Chicago Fire of 1871. There areseveral spellings of Hennessey-I think this is the correct one, but as one cansee in the census records & Chicago Directories below, spelling varies (aswas common for the time). On April 30, 1898,he saved 3 children locked in a burning building at 10:13 am at 4629 Paulina Street. For this bravery, he won the Lambert TreeAward. Thebook History of Chicago Firehouses of the 19th Century, Vol 1 by KenLittle & John McNalis, 1996 on pages 291 and 290 show photos of Engine 49where John Hennessey was the first captain. This Engine was organized July 15, 1889 at Dreyer/ Paulina & 47th street. It was later relocated to 1653 W 43rd St in Aug 8, 1927. the original firehouse was built in 1884 at the SW corner of 47thand Ashland inan area known as “New City”. Later it was in the Town of Lake-- then the fire house was acquired byannexation to Chicagoeffective July 15, 1889. Heating was done by a pot bellied stove. This Engine was sent to the Swift Warehousefire in 1899, and a member of the company killed- Pipeman Patrick O’Neill.
