- John J.Hennessey married Emma Teed. He was afireman & worked his way up to Captain. Unfortunately, she died before she could see that happen. She died Jan 11, 1877. They were both born about 1848(maybe she was born 1850..?) Therecords for their marriage may not exist due to the Chicago Fire of 1871.
There areseveral spellings of Hennessey-I think this is the correct one, but as one cansee in the census records & Chicago Directories below, spelling varies (aswas common for the time).
On April 30, 1898,he saved 3 children locked in a burning building at 10:13 am at 4629 Paulina Street. For this bravery, he won the Lambert TreeAward.
Thebook History of Chicago Firehouses of the 19th Century, Vol 1 by KenLittle & John McNalis, 1996 on pages 291 and 290 show photos of Engine 49where John Hennessey was the first captain. This Engine was organized July 15, 1889 at Dreyer/ Paulina & 47th street.
